Austrian Silver Philharmonic

Learn about the origin, design and production of Austrian Silver Philharmonic coins.

Origin Story

The Austrian Silver Philharmonics debuted in 2008 as a late follow-up to its counterpart, the Austrian Gold Philharmonics, launched in 1989. Together, they pay tribute to the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

Design

The design is the same as that on the Austrian Gold Philharmonic coins:

  • Heads: The obverse design features the Great Organ located in the Musikverein concert hall in Vienna.
  • Tails: On the reverse, the Austrian Silver Philharmonic has cellos, violins, a bassoon, a harp, the Viennese horn, and a stringed bass as the central focus.

Production Details

Austrian Silver Philharmonics are one troy ounce of high-purity silver bullion coins at .999 or 99.99% silver and have a legal tender value of 1.5 Euros.

In the first year of the Austrian Silver Philharmonic coin program (2008), almost 8 million coins were minted.
